Ama Dablam Expedition

Trip Duration 30 days
Highest Altitude 6812 m
Trip Season Spring & Autumn
Starts From Kathmandu

Mt. Amadablam with the height of 6812m falls under the category of the most wonderful mountains in Nepal. The name for this mountain comes from two words “Ama” and “Dablam”. Ama means mother whereas dablam is the sacred jewelry box that is worned by women from Sherpa community. One of the amazing things about this mountain is that the glacier which lies in the south west part of this mountain forms an image similar to jewel box hanging on the neck of the mountain. Hence, the mountain got the name AmaDablam. To be precise, AmaDablam means Mother’s Jewel Box.

Mike Gill from New Zealand, Barry Bishop from USA, Mike Ward from UK and Wally Romanes from New Zealand were the first climbers to attempt this mountain on March 13, 1961. Many climbers have attempted this mountain since then and the mountain continues to attract more climbers.

It takes around 30 days to complete this expedition. Around 16 days are used up to reach the three high camps which are fixed above the base camp and the peak. There will be trekking through the alluring Khumbu valley below Tengboche in the remaining days. The expedition begins from Kathmandu with flight to Lukla following the Everest base camp trail after which there will be hike to reach Tengboche.

After we leave the Everest base camp trail from Tengboche, we head for the AmaDablam base camp. The mountain is climbed through the south-west ridge. However, this route is difficult technically and requires going through the hardest and the most challenging saddle ridges, rocky ground and boulders to reach the first camp.Similarly, there will be terrible rocky bowl and edges in the fixed line that goes up to the second base camp. The path to the third camp consists of steep mixed alleyways of rock, ice and snow; slanting ground filled with snow, precipitous snow, icetunnel and has the snow ridge. To reach the summit from the third base camp, one has to go through a steep climb on ice and snow and through large hanging glacier.

The top of the mountain provides splendid view of Mt. Everest, the Island peak, Makalu, the Khumbu Himalayas and other nearby snow-capped mountains.

While returning from the mountain, the same route is followed till Lukla and the flight from Kathmandu is taken from Lukla.

The best time to go for this expedition is spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). Furthermore, the expedition in early winter will be appropriate for you if you want to avoid traffic.
