1. Manaslu Expedition Halted Due to Unfavourable Weather

Around 1000 climbers from different checkpoints have been returned to Manaslu Base Camp due to the unfavourable weather. Heavy snowfall was seen in late September, usually the peak season for the Manaslu Expedition.

The snowfall dumped up to 3 to 5 feet of snow at Base Camp, resulting in the burying of tents and rendering the routes to Camp IV impassable.

Later, it was confirmed and declared that the autumn climbing season on Manaslu was closed due to unstable snow conditions and unfavourable long-term forecasts, also following the government's high alert for heavy rainfall from September 22 to 28. Major leading adventure companies halted operations and pulled expedition teams back to Base Camp and Kathmandu, including 493 foreign nationals.

On time response to halt the Manaslu expedition was executed, but an avalanche took the lives of 2 climbers at Camp III, a foreign German national of Indian origin and a Nepalese guide.

2. Climbers Rescued Safely from Island Peak.

Heavy snowfall in the Upper Khumbu Region, led by heavy rainfall, has disturbed movement across trekking trails. The heavy snowfall left trekkers and climbers stuck on different high-altitude trekking routes across the Island Peak area. The seven foreign European climbers of Chinese Origin were later rescued safely.

The Chief District Officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar reported that in the upper Everest Region, the snow exceeded half a meter, leading to a halt in the further movement of trekkers and mountaineers toward high-risk zones. A further notice has been issued advising the guides, porters, trekking guides and trekkers to halt ascending towards snowbound areas, which include places like Thukla, Thoraksep and Gokyo, until further advisory notice from the officials, as emergency rescue and disaster response teams remain on standby across the region in different parts to ensure the fastest availability in emergencies.

3. Climbers Missing on Himlung

On September 27, 16 Nepalese went missing at Himlung Himal due to an uncertain avalanche. The rescue operation is actively going on, despite the weather preventing helicopters from reaching altitudes above 6000m, said Ram Krishna Lamichane, the director general of the Department of Tourism, to the operators trying to get the best rescue as soon as possible.

4 bodies were found beneath the snow and brought to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. Later, 3 more bodies were recovered by October 1. The Director General indicated that the missing people included kitchen staff, Sherpa guides and other support workers, based on the initial information. The rescue is going on actively, while searching for all missing. All of them are in preparation for the upcoming Autumn climbing season, for rope fixing, Base Camp set-up and route marking.

4. Trekking Route Updates

Due to ongoing natural factors across the Himalayas, some of the trekking routes are affected. The recent Bhotekoshi flood, heavy rainfall and snowfall made travelling across Nepal a bit confusing for travellers. But Nepal is open and actively welcoming travellers, as most of the major trekking routes and regions are open.
Here, you can check the official issue about open routes in the official report from the Nepal Tourism Board and the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN).
